Admit it, you've seen results from the latest fad diet and caught yourself wondering if you should be following that plan. You've questioned if you've been doing everything wrong. You've blamed yourself for not being strong enough or having enough will power. Maybe you have even accepted that "this" is just the way you are and your body is never going to change.

We've all been there and it's not your fault.

For many years most of us can recall hearing that the magic formula for losing weight is eating less and moving more. It sounds great right? If we eat less food and burn more calories through exercise, fat should just melt off of us, right?

For the most part, this is initially the case. But what happens after our bodies catch up and figure out what we're doing? If this was the magic formula, then why are obesity rates higher now than ever before? Why are we facing such a terrible health epidemic from chronic diseases that are usually brought on by lifestyle choices? Could it be that the advice we have been receiving for years is wrong?


When our nation started noticing an increase in the case of obesity and obesity related illnesses the dieting market took off. Fad diet after fad diet claimed to help hundreds of thousands of Americans lose the weight and keep it off. The best part, all you have to do is follow their plan! Be careful though--most of these plans don't allow for customization or any wiggle room. Broccoli doesn't agree with you? Too bad. Eat exactly 2 cups of it with every dinner. Can't fit your last meal of the day in before 6pm? Ope, you're not going to get optimal results.

These plans remind me of those "first they're sour, then they're sweet" commercials for

Sour Patch Kids... but in reverse.

First, fad diets are sweet. We come across a diet infomercial or ad and it's as if it's speaking directly to us. Better yet, they give you a hand book and all you have to do is follow it! No thought involved. Just shop off the pre-made grocery list and make the approved recipes. Oh, and don't forget to follow their workouts... wuhla! You'll look like their after-pictures in no time.

But then, they're sour. Tell me if this dialogue sounds familiar to you: "What happens if I miss a workout?" "But wait, I don't like salmon." "I really have to eat it how many times a week?!" "Well, (insert your name here), if you don't suck it up and follow the program you're never going to lose weight. So suck. it. up!" I don't know about you, but I don't want to have to suck it up or suck it in. These fad diets have led to many people pointing the finger at themselves and losing the confidence they need to make change. They return to their annual physicals every year and feel like failures when their doctor points out they still haven't lost 10 pounds.

This creates a viscous diet cycle that I will go into more detail about on Friday during our 3BT for the week.


Let's talk about what I like to call nutritional confidence. This is the confidence you gain by learning what speaks to your body and how it responds to certain foods and lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, and exercise. You need this confidence in order to create lasting change.

It's starts with education and tuning in. How do we do that? Starting with a food log is my best piece of advice. By tracking what you are fueling your body with, you are setting yourself up for success. You'll be able to look back on a day that you felt great and see what foods helped you feel that way. You'll also have data to support why you've had a stomach ache since lunch. The smpl days food log ain't your ordinary food log. Equipped with symptom trackers, you'll be able to pin point what foods aggravate your body and which foods make it sing. You'll have your own data to support why you don't have to eat broccoli or salmon if it doesn't agree with you and the power to create a plan that best fits YOU.
